Some places seem destined to be forgotten, left in silence, waiting for someone to bring them back to life.

Many were foreigners, Belgians, Dutch, Americans, who saw in Calcata a retreat from the fast-paced world. They bought the old houses, often for next to nothing, and made them their own. Even the hippies who settled in the caves carved into the tuff rock became part of this new, unconventional community.

The village transformed into something entirely unique: a haven where creativity flourished in every corner. Painters, sculptors, musicians, and even digital artists filled its streets with life, turning Calcata into a collective myth. Today, it is home to one of Italy’s first telematic art centers, a testament to the innovative spirit that continues to shape it.But the true magic of Calcata isn’t just in its art, it’s in what it represents. A place where people seek refuge from a consumerist world, where history, nature, and creativity intertwine, proving that some places are never truly lost.

Among the artists who have breathed new life into this village are some unforgettable figures. Like Angela Marrone, who began her artistic journey at just 12 years old and was one of the first to settle in Calcata in the 1980s. Another key figure is Gabriella Corrias, a master in mask-making and leatherwork who has been perfecting her craft since 1976. And then, there is Pancho Garrison, a sculptor whose background as a dancer informs his unique creations, sculptures that capture the very essence of movement, forever etched in Calcata’s artistic landscape.
