Grazie, a tiny village just 7 km from Mantua, is one of those places. At first glance, it may seem small, but as you explore, you realize that “tiny” might not be the right word. Its soul is encapsulated in the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin, where just a single moment is enough to understand you’ve entered a truly special place.
A Sanctuary of Stories and Miracles
The statues inside the sanctuary are not mere decorations; they are figures eager to tell their stories. Made of papier-mâché, these sculptures are strikingly realistic, wrinkled skin, tense muscles, and eyes brimming with emotion. According to tradition, they represent people who were miraculously saved by the Madonna delle Grazie. From shipwreck survivors to those healed from grave illnesses, even individuals who escaped execution, the statues create a direct connection with visitors, reminding them that this sanctuary is not just a place of worship, but also one of gratitude and testimony.
And then, just as you raise your eyes, the Unexpected happens: a massive crocodile hangs from the ceiling (as you can see in the photo). Legend has it that this creature was brought here centuries ago as an ex-voto, and ever since, it has watched over visitors with its mysterious presence
The Peaceful Flow of the Mincio River
Stepping out of the sanctuary, the tranquility of the village invites you to linger a little longer. Wandering through Grazie, the path naturally leads you to the river. The banks of the Mincio welcome you with their calm, offering a moment of serenity in a place that, though small, leaves a lasting impression in your memories
The Enchantment of the Madonnari Festival
If there’s one time when Grazie truly transforms, it’s during Ferragosto. Every year, the village hosts its Madonnari Festival, turning the piazza of the Sanctuary into an open-air canvas. Madonnari, itinerant street artists, often not devout but named for the sacred and popular figures they depict, use colorful chalks to create stunning works of art, telling stories both sacred and secular.
As the sun sets, the artwork comes to life under artificial lights, creating a surreal atmosphere that enchants visitors.
And of course, no festival is complete without delicious food: stalls offering local specialties fill the air with the aromas of polenta, cured meats, and more, blending perfectly with the warm, festive spirit.
